25.11.2011. International Conference on District Energy 2012

First announcement and call fo papers

INVITATION FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE

The development of energy systems in the modern urbanised world has become an axiom for the contemporary society, shaping its advancement and progress. All such systems of energy flow through networks allow the incessant and indispensable operation of innumerable functions, ranging from heating and lighting to driving technological processes and systems.

The common key objective of all highly urbanised and technically developed countries is to increase the efficiency of energy use. Providing an efficient energy supply no longer means just tackling an engineering challenge of increasing the efficiency of energy generation and transmission equipment, but also a challenge of raising competitive advantage on the global market.

District energy systems are usually combined with the generation and distribution of electricity. These systems represent the transport and distribution of heat, cold, and the gas, and consist of networks through which energy for the world of today is flowing. The goal of increased energy efficiency can be achieved through an application of reasonable management of such systems.

Future investments in the energy area should stimulate lower consumption of primary energy, both in the process of energy generation and end use.

Accurate measurement of energy consumption is a precondition for an increase in energy efficiency. The regulation of systems for prompt adjustment of energy supply and an individual customer's current demand, and the introduction of renewable energy into the existing energy supply systems will certainly lead to significant shifts in the field of energy efficiency.

Thus, the main topic of this year's SDDE conference is an increase in the efficiency of energy systems. The topic is broad, and in a search for the best practices addresses the following issues:
  • How to provide a transition to low temperature regimes in district heating systems?
  • How to integrate dislocated heat and electricity co-generation units and set up "intelligent networks"?
  • Is the purpose of measuring energy consumption more than just calculating and monitoring consumption?
  • Examples of good practices in the area of energy and environmental legislation which enable existing systems to be transferred to more sophisticated ones providing significantly higher energy efficiency.
  • New business models of energy companies shaped to provide long-term competitive advantage and high efficiency.
  • How to provide efficient financing for new energy systems, management concepts and technologies?
  • How to efficiently introduce renewable energy to district energy systems and provide their sustainable development?
  • How to shape the regulatory framework for faster achievement of energy policy objectives?
  • Can investments into higher energy efficiency serve as a buffer against the financial crisis? Examples of good practices.
I wish to invite you to participate in this year's meeting of SDDE (Slovene District Energy Association) with your contributions and discussions relating to new concepts of operation of district energy systems and business models for future cost and energy efficient supply, aimed at promoting the long-term competitive advantage of companies and contributing to their higher added value.

Kindly invited to Portorož from 25th till 27th March 2012!
